POV: Maya Castellano Two things happened on the fifth day. The first was that she finished the novel. She’d been reading in pieces since the first night. An hour before sleep and twenty minutes over breakfast while Kofi answered emails across the table with the comfortable silence of two people who had stopped needing to fill space. The woman in the book did the brave thing on page 247 and then spent forty three more pages learning to live inside having done it. Maya read those forty three pages slowly.

"Sermons? You seem to have our roles reversed, you're the Mr upright and forgiving who always have an unnecessary long lectures on becoming an angel in life." "It's not unnecessary." He protested, "you really need to be forgiving" "Yup! Still in chapter one in the book I sent." She said nodding. "Chapter two but that's not what we're on right now." She smacked him with her purse. "You're still in chapter two? I'm not getting married to a man who can't finish a book of just 100 pages." "Actually a hundred and thirty one pages and you're so violent." He said rubbing on the spot on his arm she'd hit.

Flipping to the next page, I try to see if there's any indication of a title, since neither the front page nor first page have one. I don't see anything of the sort. Instead, I find a paragraph of ink marks that look similar to the one on the first page. "Is this a joke?" I flip to the next page and find the same handwriting, but the text in this one looks longer. Groaning, already starting to get irritated by the seemingly pointless search, I flip through some more pages, hoping that I find something meaningful. Rather, most of the pages of the book are blank. Just bare sheets of paper.

She was upset now, but they both were, and it wasn’t a good sign, not for Gina or anybody else around. “Damn it, this book is heavy!” Anna yelled while they looked at her surprised because she dropped it on the floor. “Oh, that’s the same page I was reading once!” She was surprised. Tyron and Derek were looking at each other in disbelief, while Sinn slowly came next to her. “Anna, darling, I’m sorry to say this, but the book is empty, there’s nothing in it, just empty pages.” Derek was trying to stay calm, while she was upset with his words.

Elena challenging him was one thing he could get used to. “You are making a mistake here, sunshine.” He was tracing her every move as she moved to the shelf. She turned to it for a second and then a book came flying to him. “You are using Tolstoy to kill me?” He caught it in time, as hardover Anna Karenina was aimed perfectly, and he placed it safely on the couch. She had no idea that all these books were first or second edition. He moved to grab her, but she was quick to dodge him and run into the hallway. “Come on, Mr. Parker. I am disappointed.”

Linda immediately pulled the stealer’s book from her back, placed it on the table and hurriedly flipped through the pages to find the blank page. “There, I need help with this page, it’s really impor-” “Go away, I can’t help you.” She suddenly cut Linda off, waving her hands dismissively. Linda heaved out a heavy sigh, shaking her head. “You’re really going to pretend you don’t know me huh? Mrs. Kennedy?’ “I don’t know you, use the door, I can’t help.” The older woman spoke again, not even casting her glance but kept her focus on the book before her.

I looked down on my watch and cursed under my breath. “Fuck, I’ve been here for twenty minutes.” I was about to give up and return the book to its original position, but a sudden gust of wind came from the window, flipping the book to the near end. I glanced back at the page and felt a chill run down my spine. In bold and black letters, it spelled the name, ‘Kamala Ahearn.’ I leaned closer to the book with wide eyes and saw a photo of a woman who was probably in her mid-40’s. She stood in front of the cloaked people that I saw from the previous pages, as if commanding them.

Song for chapter: Happier by Olivia Rodrigo *** Half the class was asleep by the time the movie ended, some on their phones and some, like me, quite intrigued. The movie wasn't what I expected. However, even though the ending had me angry, I could say I enjoyed it thoroughly. I could also tell why Ms Fletcher chose this film to 'teach' us about feelings and behaviours. The movie was emotionally frustrating, yet you could understand the lead characters completely. Anna Karenina, a Russian minister's wife and mother of a beautiful little boy, finds herself in an affair with a cavalry officer, Count Vronsky. He was undoubtedly a catch indeed, and I don't blame Anna for falling in love with him.

This was my best chance to do so. I kept turning the pages, trying to find the most important part of their story. I'd read about the small cuts and cake dust. I wanted to know what exactly caused it and the true story behind it. It seemed manipulated. Then I found one of the pages whose texts were printed in red. I sat down and read the first page, shaking my head in pity. Turning to the second page of the red text print, the door creaked open, and I let out a loud gasp as I quickly placed the book under the pillow, my face filled with fear.
