It was my favourite amongst my paintings. Ace gazed at it longer than I expected him to. It was an abstract painting with mostly blue, purple and green colours in it. I made this painting when I first arrived in the States and felt free and independent from the oppression of my mother and her Ghanaian relatives. Ace turned and smiled at me the same way he smiled at me the first time we met. I looked away as my heart skipped a beat. It was beating rapidly and I wondered if it was because of his smile. He gazed at me, watching me amusingly. I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out.

Rushing to hold back the urge to punch the poor thing, I harshly bit down on my tongue. “Welcome to The Fabulous Painting. Is there anything I can help you with?”, he asks. “Do you have any light blue paint?”, Jess asks. “Follow me.”, he says while walking away. Jess skips as she follows behind the worker. Not looking back, I continue to follow them. Taking notice of all the original paint; the light blues were across the aisle from the glow in the dark paint, grabbing a gallon then head over to Jess to see her debating which blue she should get.

Music is a pain killer and at that time it acted as an anxiety killer for me. My muscles relaxed and my body stopped shaking. So here I am, standing in the doorway, watching them moving together in harmony as they use the roller brushes to smooth light gray paint on the walls. I smile, listening to the two of them singing together. I don't know the song, but they sound good together. Jeremy points his brush at Bron and sings “Well, I know a lady, that's down on her love.. cause I used to hold her and have that special touch.. but work took me away from home late at nights.. and I wasn't there, when she turned out the lights..” Bronwen sings “Then both of us got lonely and I gave into lust.. and she just couldn't live with a man she couldn't trust..”

I grabbed the huge canvas and my paints without bothering to tie my hair up. Colors collided on the canvas, raw and wild. Rage mixed with sorrow, bleeding into every stroke—red for the fury in the background, black for the emptiness, lines in the red, white for the hollow ache blending with the blue, brown for the weight of it all. But...Blue surged, sharp and piercing, until his image actually emerged. Not the man himself, but his eyes. Those cruel, calculating blue eyes that knew exactly how to lie. The image spoke...as if it was actually him on the other side—laughing at me, cruelly.

Notifications flooded the screen, but I ignored all of them until I saw the newest message request. The profile picture showed an empty hockey rink beneath white lights. The username read BlueLine. My heart lurched. The preview only showed part of the message. It’s me. Blue line. You... My thumb hovered above the screen. One tap and I could read the rest. One tap and I could answer him. I wanted to ask how he had survived these years. I wanted to tell him I had never left willingly. Most of all, I wanted to tell him I still remembered the promise about the blue line.
