I could hear her sigh behind me, annoyed, impatient, but she followed anyway.
Inside the suite, the lights were dim—just the way I left them. Darkness was a shield. Brightness meant exposure.
I poured myself a drink—straight bourbon, no ice, no chaser—and downed it in one gulp.
“Lucien,” she said, her voice lower now, “you can’t just shut down every time something real happens between us.”
I placed the glass down a little too hard. The sound cracked through the quiet.
“This isn’t real, Helena,” I bit out. “This is… chaos. It’s dangerous. We keep going down this path, and someone’s going to get destroyed.”
