Darius and Kaidora were there already, supporting Kaida between them, easing her gently upright onto her feet.
She was thin and battered and held together by something stronger than her body, and when her eyes found Aurelian crossing the floor toward her, they widened with a question Kaidora answered before she could ask it.
“That’s your son,” Kaidora said softly.
Kaida’s lips parted. Tears spilled down her face as Aurelian closed the last steps between them.
He wrapped his arms around her carefully, like she might break, and she held onto him with whatever strength remained in her body, her face pressed into his shoulder, both of them shaking.
