I nod. “I’m Hax,” he says. “Milo.” “Good to meet you.” It’s like he doesn't even care that I’m a hybrid. Or maybe he doesn’t know. Maybe Wilder and the High Sorcerer aren’t spreading that part around just yet. It would make sense. I’d probably keep it quiet if I was in their position.

The Red Hoods emblem, a hood encircled by a bow and arrow, was embossed on the front in faded gold filigree.

Her eyes fell on a book with a black cover, the gold letters reading: “The Art of Breaking Chains.” She pulled it free, curiosity winning, and curled into his leather chair. The chair was far too big for her, swallowing her small frame, but she felt oddly safe in it. Before she realized, her eyelids grew heavy. The book slipped onto her lap as she drifted into sleep. Hunter returned late, his mood thunderous after the ring, after Geret. His mind was sharp, his body burning with violence he hadn’t been able to unleash fully. But the instant he stepped into the quiet house, he sought her.

A shadow emerged from behind a gnarled oak, and I was ready to strike—until I saw him. Hunter. Dressed in a loose tunic, a satchel slung across his shoulder, he grinned at me like this was any other day. “Fancy seeing you two here.” I exhaled sharply, lowering my weapon. “Hunter, what the hell are you doing here?” He held up a weathered sketchbook. “Would you believe me if I said I came to draw the ruins? The landscapes here are—” “—dangerous,” I finished, stepping toward him. “This place isn’t some scenic retreat. Harper and Layla are hiding somewhere in these ruins, and we don’t know what kind of traps they’ve set.”

There’s a picture of some sorta tribal man squatting down with both hands raised to the sky etched into the cover and traced in silver. Otherwise, it’s a plain-looking book, all bound in pebbly black leather.
