The roaring sound of thunder coursed through his twin core meridians first, then surged into his twelve primary meridians and spread across the network of his entire body.

I felt something tearing inside my head, trying to break through a wall I never knew existed. The Priestess's voice, cool and imperious, cut through to me. "Princes! The Rite of Ascension begins! Claim thy Lady!" I looked up, the pain overridden by a surge of adrenaline. The three huge auras of Zilo, Klaus, and Zack no longer stood afar. They moved, fast, closing in on the circle.

The title was embossed in faded silver script: Vampiric Death and Rebirth. My heart began to pound. This was it. This had to be it. I opened the cover, the pages yellowed and brittle. The text was handwritten in an elegant, spidery script, the ink the color of dried blood. I scanned the passages, skipping over dense paragraphs about blood rites and soul transference, until a particular chapter heading caught my eye: "The Phoenix Ascendant."
