Cursing, Asher turned off the shower and wrapped his wet body in his black robe. He immediately pulled a cigarette from his stash and lit it. “Damn!” He would only smoke if things got out of hand and he can’t answer questions that have been bugging him. And what happened in the carnival last night bothers the hell out of him. What is Emerald? Was she a monster? A witch? A vampire? Or maybe a shapeshifter. He doesn’t know the answer to it, and neither did Marana. Asher was lost deep in his thoughts when he heard a knock on his door. His eyebrows knitted and waited for the person to talk.

The rest of the group follows as we make our way closer to the fire. She reaches for an a piece of ember bark that sits in a bowl near the fire. Lyra takes a deep breath, and throws the ember bark into the fire. "I'm afraid I will never be enough." she says so softly I almost don't hear her. The ember bark burns so brightly I have to look away. My gaze collides with Callan who has a blonde sitting comfortably on his lap. Something ugly burns in my stomach. I force myself to look away, and direct my attention back to the fire. My thoughts begin to spin as I try to settle on what fear I'm going to give up.

CASSANDRA The horrible sight before my eyes was the worst nightmare I’d ever seen, yet no matter how hard I pinched myself, it wasn’t going away. As the fire covered Asher’s body, his skin began to peel down. Soon, the black burnt skin became ashes, and then the ashes disappeared entirely and blew down the corridor. “No!” I screamed out of anger and sorrow. “No, no, no!” My lungs ached as I cried out, but I couldn’t stop. Tears spilled down my face like a river, and my vision started to break out with spots as I shook.

They roasted marshmallows, singing songs and sharing tales until their eyes grew heavy.

Fire, ash, smoke, death... the city was in flames, as were its people. Screams pierced the night with the red tones of danger and death which pervaded the seemingly endless darkness. Men and women fled from their homes and scattered families ran panicked through the streets seeking for sanctuary, but there was none to be found from the children of darkness and their monstrous fiends as they assailed what remained of the city in violence. Blackness gripped the night, the moon red like the blood of the streets, and a single word was spoken her: "Escape."

Jesse and Caleb stood to leave when they caught sight of Asher approaching. Caleb moved slowly toward him. Asher stepped forward to meet him, with Amanda close behind. They embraced, tears streaming down Caleb’s face. “It’s over now, sweetheart,” Asher whispered, holding him tightly. Caleb’s gaze shifted to the spot where Henry had stood before the mine detonated. Asher’s grip loosened as he followed Caleb’s eyes. Caleb took slow steps toward the blast site, Amanda and Jesse a few paces behind. The ground was blackened and torn apart, the air thick with the sharp, metallic scent of blood and smoke.

Ash-pale, ember-hot. She said nothing. She never had to. The fire obeyed her silence. The crowd did too. Vessa didn’t look away. To look away was surrender. One officer begged. One stood proud. One ran. None escaped. The flames touched them all the same. Seren didn’t flinch. Ash rose like winter’s breath, catching in the folds of Vessa’s cloak, in her hair, in the corners of her eyes. She remained after the crowd scattered. She always remained.

Ash’s POV The roar of the clubhouse hit me before I even turned off my engine. Laughter, shouts and the sound of bottles clinking rent the air and for a moment, I wonder how they could easily fall back into their normal lives less than twelve hours after an attack. It was chaos the way I remembered it, but somehow louder and more… non challant. Inside, the air was thick with smoke and sweat. A few brothers cheered when they saw me, others nodded, their eyes sharp, reading me like they weren’t sure what version of Ash had come back.
