GRACE'S POV When I left the hospital, the sky had turned gray. It seemed to match my mood. Lovely. I half expected it to start raining so I could finally let go and cry my eyes out. I stood outside for a long moment, holding the envelope of medical reports against my chest. Maybe if I held it tight enough, it would disappear alongside the illness. It didn't work. Eventually, I realised that I probably looked weird as I stood there, outside, unmoving. People probably thought I was a suicide bomber. I drove away from the hospital, praying that the ache in my chest would disappear.

Realizing she had misspoken, Ashley quickly said, "That's not what I meant. I'm saying you should act as soon as possible." Andrew looked at the sky, which had only a few scattered stars, for a long time before saying meaningfully, "There are a lot of dark clouds tonight. And the stars mean the clouds aren't enough yet. When they are enough to cover all the stars, the sky will be dark," He then patted Ashley's shoulder and continued with a light laugh, "Based on my experience, the wind should be picking up soon."

THE SKY LOOKED SOMETHING LIKE the early hours of dawn—not bright, not dark. Red clouds gathered in clusters over the horizon to the left, and a grey outline of the sun and moon hung up high in the sky side by side with a soft sliver glow. Everywhere as far as my eyes could see looked the same, bare and plain under the soft shadow of light, and the ground where we stood was as dark as night and soft, giving off a feeling of standing afloat on air.
