“And it concerns you too.” She went completely still. Looked at Ryder. He’d stopped washing. Was looking at her face. Reading it, the way he always read it, and whatever he saw there made his jaw set in a way she hadn’t seen before. “Who is it?” he asked quietly. She held the phone out. Said the name. The colour didn’t leave his face. Ryder didn’t do that, he didn’t go pale, didn’t perform shock. But something happened in his eyes.

“My name is Alpha Asher Voss, Alpha of Ashford Dominion Pack. It’s such an honor to meet you.” She turned to face me, and for one disorienting second, the world narrowed to a single point — her eyes. They were pale, striking grey, the color of winter sky just before a storm. The same color as Lyra’s. I had looked into eyes exactly that shade a thousand times, across a dinner table, across a council chamber, across the distance of a marriage that had never been what it should have been. But that was impossible. Lyra Hartley was dead.

More of them are like laughing at me and chuckling looking at me and when the balls of my eyes change their directions, I can see some of them looking at me worried but aren’t doing anything to help me. I can see his fists clutched into the tight fist, both of them and his posture being a statue over there.

Ember pressed, her face illuminated by a flickering light panel overhead, casting her features in harsh relief. "The Ashen Guard." The name tasted like ash on my tongue. "Malagar's elite hunters. We tracked and captured fire-born creatures and anything else with power he wanted." My gaze flicked to Ember meaningfully. "People like you." The mark throbbed again, harder this time. I suppressed a grunt of pain and continued, words tumbling out like stones I'd been carrying too long.

The latter groaned and tried to stand on her knees. "Ashly!" she threw herself beside her and helped her to a sitting position, though she was mostly leaning on her, unable to hold herself up. She checked her bestfriend dirty and tear stained face. "Your eyes..." she muttered. The Iris of Ashly eyes had little specks of black and his Sclera looked a light - almost pink - red. "What happened?" She shook her head. Throat dry from screaming after the torture she had endured.

“Asher is alive, but—but there’s more important things you need to deal with right now. Do you understand?” With every fiber of my being I wanted to grab her back and scream, “What’s more important than my mate? Nothing! Absolutely nothing!” I didn’t, though, because staring into her eyes brought something to my attention, something I might’ve missed if she hadn’t forced me to get myself together. Her eyes were bloodshot, the whites tainted pink from the thin veins crawling like earthworms. There were bags beneath her eyes from lack of sleep, but they were swollen and an angry shade of red.

Despite everything, Ryder moved towards us, his eyes shining with a crazy light. “You won't win,” he said angrily, dark shadows moving around his hands. “I've waited too long, giving up too much. I will not be denied my destiny!” With a gesture, Ryder summoned a horde of shadowy creatures. They poured from the darkness between the trees, a nightmarish army of claws and teeth and glowing red eyes. “Asher!” I called out, seeing the creatures converge on him. “I've got this,” he shouted back, producing a wicked-looking blade from somewhere in his gear. “You two focus on Ryder!”

Alethea I look around the room, and then I see him. Asher. His piercing green eyes cut through the crowd like a blade, locking onto me with such intensity that it sends a shiver down my spine. His gaze is changing color, darkening, flickering between green and something more dangerous. Something wild. I shift on one foot, suddenly uneasy. I can't make out all his features from here, but I don't need to. I can feel his fury from across the room.
