I’ll wait. She stared at the message for a long time. Then she turned her phone off and tried to sleep. Sleep didn’t come easy. When it did, she dreamed of eyes, Ethan’s warm brown ones smiling at her across an airport terminal, and another pair, darker, watching from the shadows. In the dream she walked toward Ethan but kept glancing back, pulled by something she couldn’t name.

Right through the sea of moving bodies, my eyes locked onto a pair of piercing hazel eyes staring right back at me. “Mate.”

Her eyes widened seeing his eyes. "You......?!" Is he a beast?

That wasn't random. "Can you take off your sunglasses? I need to see your eyes," Aria said. Eleanor hesitated for a moment, then reached up and took off her sunglasses, revealing her eyes. Aria looked at them closely. They were beautiful eyes, but the pupils were in an unnatural shade of grayish-white. Worst of all, those eyes were filled with despair, like two wells about to run dry. Aria pulled out her phone and turned on the flashlight, shining it gently at Eleanor's pupils. "Can you see the light?"

Everyone else is calm and collected as if nothing out of the ordinary is going on. I glance back over at the crying infant, her little eyes filled with tears that roll down her fawn-coloured cheeks. It’s the first time I’ve seen her eyes, and I can’t help but feel surprised as I take in their appearance. They’re intense, like pools of lava formed by a dazzling gold around the pupil that bleeds into a vibrant crimson red. As a Goddess, I had expected her to be born with silver eyes like the other Gods, but instead, they are the perfect mix of her mother’s golden eyes and the blood red that once signified Oshmin’s curse.

He adds “I’m a virgin” my word vomit spews. I have no bloody idea why that’s relevant to helping him refocus. And honestly if I could kick my own arse, right now, I would. “That isn’t a redirection or refocus Eve,” he says, his voice harsh and his eyes ... His eyes make me step forward to him. One Amber eye and one black eye. They are extraordinary. “Your eyes, they’re beautiful,” I state, reaching up to touch his face.

"Your eyes. They're different. Go look." Elena frowned and went over to the mirror. She jerked her head back and looked over at Marie, then back at the mirror again. Her eyes were different. They were a deeper green, almost forest green now, and the tiny flecks of gold that had been there, were a lot bigger. They gave the effect of gold leaf rubbed into a forest green canvas. They were iridescent and glowed with an inner light. "Well, that's going to be fun trying to explain. Everyone knows I don't wear glasses or contacts, so that excuse won't fly. Any ideas, my smart, sexy Marie?"

He told me. Every elder at the table has light eyes. Light blue, light green, light hazel, and even a light purple almost like mine. The guards around them had brown eyes, almost milk chocolate in color. Whereas Al had dark eyes as well as the men wearing black combat boots and uniforms. It was like the color of eyes ranked your strength. If Al is in the lower end, I can't imagine the strength these lighter eyes have.

She can see it in his eyes. MATE.
