Suddenly I hear an animal growl beside me, my mind is whipped back to reality. My head turns around and sees Austin's canines press on my dad's neck with a low rumble of growls. Dad tries to defend himself, but his strength is not stronger enough to fight against a werewolf. I've never seen Austin like this before. He is the Alpha of a powerful pack, and he has a rich family. People like him never get their hands fill with blood or get involved in fighting things like this. But now he gets furious about the kidnapping and is doing silly things for me. Getting his fancy pants down in the dirty mud and slamming the shit out of dad with his own fists.

The woman faded, drifting toward the far wall, eyes full of longing. I stared at Austin, unable to speak. My mind spun with questions. “What… What's going on? How did you get here?” Austin looked at me. “You’re safe Ruby. She can’t hurt you.” My hands shook. “How did you do that? People don’t just show up out of thin air!” Austin stepped closer, watching me carefully. “There are things in this world you don’t know about. It wove deep into the woods, winding through thick brush and sharp turns until I reached them—Austin, in wolf form, and Aurora riding low on his back. They stopped as soon as they caught sight of me, their bodies tense. Aurora’s eyes widened. She slid off quickly, reading the fury rolling off me in waves. She knew what was coming. I didn’t stop. I lunged. I crashed into Austin with full force, sending us both rolling across the dirt, teeth bared, snarls ripping from our throats. He met me halfway, growling through the mind link. “What the hell are you doing—”

Austin turned blue, his feet dug into the ground, and his efforts to fend off Maverick were fading. “Maverick, please stop. Dustin’s inside,” I pleaded. Maverick threw him to the ground. Austin shifted into his wolf. He growled at Maverick. Maverick semi-shifted. His clothes tore into shreds, and fur sprouted from his body. “Get off my property!” My mate roared. Austin’s wolf flinched. He eyed Sienna and me before making the wise decision to run off. I turned to Sienna and sighed. “You’re back.”

A complete and utter nightmare. “You seem distressed little wolf,” Austin said, a hint of something that might have been dark amusement in his tone. Or maybe I imagined it. “ you’re him,” I stammered, my mind reeling. “They said you were a monster. A psychopath.” “Rumors are often exaggerated,” he said smoothly, though there was nothing reassuring in his voice. “And sometimes, they’re understated.”

Austin grins at him wickedly, “Or maybe you will have your work cut out for you Renz. If she can beat me, imagine what she’ll do to you.” I laugh and rub my hands together, “this will be fun for me then.” Austin smiles at me, but then the tone of his voice becomes serious. “Rebel, I understand your past, and I’m sure I will have questions in the future, but in the meantime, I want to make sure you learn about werewolf history, our pack history, hierarchy, and everything else you didn’t get to learn.
