"I took the high ground," Philia corrected. She sat on the edge of his desk, her boots dangling. "That is what conquerors do."
She took a long swallow of wine, watching him over the rim of the goblet. Her slate-grey eyes were sharp, intelligent, and devoid of the mockery she usually displayed in public.
"You confuse me, Oreon," she said suddenly.
"The feeling is mutual."
"No," Philia shook her head. "I am simple. I see a thing, I want a thing, I take a thing. But you... you see a thing, you want a thing, and then you build a fence around it and ask permission to touch it."
