Her eyes, wide with shock, darted around as if she expected Neptune to appear again. “Akira, it’s me,” I said softly, trying again. She slowly looked up, her gaze locking onto mine. For a moment, it was as if she didn’t recognize me. Then, something shifted in her eyes. “Nyx,” she breathed. Tears spilled down her cheeks, and she launched herself into my arms. I caught her, wrapping her tightly in my embrace. She clung to me like I was the only thing keeping her from falling apart. I felt her shudder against me, heard the quiet, broken sobs escaping her lips.

Her gray eyes swirled faintly with black, the echo of the shadow still lurking inside. Nyx rushed out of the house, sobbing before she even reached us. She dropped to her knees and pulled Aria into her arms. “My girl… baby, talk to Mommy! Please, say something!” She bit her lip so hard it bled, tears pouring down her face. Aria reached for her mother desperately. Her mouth moved, but no sound came. Silent tears streamed down her cheeks. Kai ran out next, his light already glowing as he grabbed his sister’s hand.

“Yet here I am—still holding it in.” She straightens, her tone snapping like a whip. “Now both of you—sit your buttocks down.” Before she finishes, Moren and Pelin drop back onto the ground, startled like pups caught in stormlight. A strangled chuckle escapes me through my tears. The ache in my throat breaks open, letting the grief spill free at last. “It doesn’t have to remain that way,” I whisper. My voice trembles, but it carries. As though she ignores my voice, Nyvrae’s own rises—raging at first, then softening into something almost pleading.

NEKTARIOS’ POV A stifled groan escaped my lips as I felt a sudden, painful jab in my chest. Sinking my claws into the tree bark beside me, I tried to catch my breath. The first five minutes felt like a living hell. Bracing myself, I let the pain rip through every vein of my body while fighting off the control it intends to have over me. The eyes rolled deep into their sockets as my veins popped in excruciating pain. I can feel the storm swelling inside of me. Holding onto the tree tightly, I bite down hard on my lower lip to take it all in. After what felt like a lifetime of excruciating pain, my body slumped into the dirt. Clamped breath easing up slowly.

Amelia’s POV I shut the door close with a bang and lean myself against the door. After crying for a long time, I need air now. Nyx doesn’t follow me. Finally, I have a chance to breath. I squat down and take deep breaths, trying not to think about Nyx, because just thinking about him makes me cry. He’s a real jerk! I need to do something to get diverted. My feet still hurt. And there’s throbbing pain in my head. My eyes are swollen and sore from crying. I’m now a whole mess.

Nothing to do with what humans offer their girlfriends. I turned my eyes back to his, and I saw he was agitated, afraid I was going to say no. “What are you waiting for, big idiot? Balls of sweat rolled down from her face. Snot ran down her nose but she was too busy crying to even bother to wipe it off. Jayden held Natasha who just shrugged him off, pushed him violently and continued her mourning. Unsure of what to do, he walked towards Diane and took his seat beside her. He put a hand on her knee. “Diane,” he called out in a whisper.

The vanity mirror was a vast, silver-backed sheet of crystal that spanned the entire length of the marble wall. In its reflection, I didn't see the Tyrant. I saw a ghost with long blonde hair, eyes like frozen lakes, and a charcoal silk jumpsuit that looked more like a bruise against the blinding white of the room. My heart hadn't just stopped; it had been seized.
