VOLKOV’S OBSESSION
His touch was firm, grounding me when my legs threatened to give way.
"Stay close, Jennifer," he murmured, his breath hot against my ear.
A few men emerged from the shadows, men who looked like Ivan with hard eyes and hidden blades. They didn’t speak, they just moved with a silent, terrifying efficiency, transferring bags and crates into a battered, muddy pickup truck parked in the center.
"Is my father really safe?" I asked, grabbing Ivan’s forearm. I needed to hear it again. I needed him to swear it.
Ivan stopped, turning fully toward me. In the flickering light of the warehouse, the scars on his neck seemed more prominent, a map of a life I could barely fathom.
