He bent down, and with a casual, almost reverent motion, placed his hand on the body of the lantern, not the lid. Instantly, the light softened, steadying into a gentle, golden radiance. He picked it up effortlessly, as if it weighed nothing. "This lantern, Darren," he said, his voice calm, almost educational, as he held the now placid, glowing artifact. "It recognizes its true wielder. It responds to them, and only them. It can be… quite volatile if someone attempts to activate it improperly."

She stepped forward, her voice steady despite the terror pounding inside her. “Stay back.” The Nightmaw hissed, retreating a few paces, its form flickering violently. But as the cracks running through its body dimmed, its crimson eyes sharpened again with rage. It wasn’t defeated. Not yet. Cael moved to her side. “It’s weakened. Finish it!” “How?” “Let the light choose!” The Nightmaw lunged again, shadows stretching like claws. Lyra raised both hands, and the golden glow surged, spiraling upward and forming a blazing arc above her. The light descended, wrapping her like a protective halo.

It crackles and swirls as I see it glow brightly and I pull it forward, holding my hands out in front of me as I direct it into my palms. “I Gaia Williams, the wolf Goddess of Hell and Harbinger of Death. Call upon the gods to lend me your power to grant me the permission to save your friend, my aunt, and our Moon Goddess. I forgive you, Selene, for everything you have done.” I open my eyes as the light grows in my palms. Selene opens her eyes and looks at me with a smile.

Yaya says curtly. I understand now, to a small degree, the frustration that Yaya and her brother must feel. They are villainized before people give them a chance to prove otherwise. Yaya places her hands on Kent and Landon again, keeping her eyes open as they begin to glow like a raging fire. She murmurs to herself in Latin again and I watch as her hands glow a bright orange, the light traveling into Kent and Landon, snaking through their veins. Archie’s jaw hangs open like a fish, while Claire and Morgan clutch onto each other, holding their breaths.
