Darkness surrounds me. My body pulls against the restraints, but nothing seems to work. My eyes look across the room, seeing the things. Growling, I pull harder and watch as people move around me. “Before you return it, we need more samples.” I watch his body walk to mine, the needle piercing through me. Growling, I snap forward, but it’s useless. I’m locked in. “Cut some skin off.” He turns as he speaks. I feel the blade slice across me. Howling, I fight, but it’s useless. Darkness sweeps away the images.

They each need someone special to show them what love actually is. "You may try," I tell him while trying to remember to breathe. He's one of my toughest battle partners and I can take him easily but it's still a workout. I advance and beat his blade with mine to provoke him. It works and he charges. With a flick of my wrist, his sword flies a few feet away. "Damn. How do you do that every time?"

His eyes were focused, almost predatory, as he took in the scene. The man holding me hesitated, his grip loosening just enough. Matthew stepped forward, his body coiled and ready, and in one swift motion, he pulled out a small black baton from behind his pants. He clicked on a button, and it suddenly stretched into a thick metal rod. His fist tightened around it and swung at my first attacker; it collided with his jaw, sending him reeling. I stumbled back as Matthew took on the other men with swift, calculated movements. He moved like a fighter—each swing controlled, each kick aimed to do maximum damage.

THE FINAL BATTLE The enemy's leader, a towering figure with eyes that glowed like embers, raised his hand and summoned a wave of dark energy. Maya and Arin dodged to the side, avoiding the attack by mere inches. Aria, the guardian of the earth, stepped forward and summoned a wall of flame to block the enemy's attack. The flames roared and crackled, illuminating the dark fortress and casting flickering shadows on the walls. Maya and Arin took advantage of the distraction to launch a counterattack. Maya summoned a storm of ice and snow, while Arin unleashed a barrage of arrows imbued with the power of the earth.

"Use everything they gave you!" A second attacker rushes us, a massive brute wielding a tactical baton. He swings low, aiming for my knees. I block the strike with my forearms, feeling the metal impact against my bones without pain, a remnant of my artificial resilience. I twist, using his own momentum against him, and drive my elbow straight into his chest with enough force to lift him off his feet. He hits the ground and doesn't get back up. "You're fighting like a machine," Liam yells over the deafening roar of the automatic weapons.

I read about all the beasts during the first week of being here and the names are all jumbled in my mind. But the Bunte is the creature Bolis chose to fight, so it can't be too bad.

"They are obviously all from the past." Brodi nodded and chewed the inside of his cheek in thought. His Beta was right, but why were they here? And how had so many made the journey? Suddenly, a battle cry had their heads jerking up just in time to see a tall, platinum-blonde woman come rushing at them, a dagger raised to strike. Brodi stepped to the side and disarmed her, but it was not without effort. She was strong and she fought his hold like a wild thing.
