“Do you really want to know, Beatrix? Because once I tell you, there’s no going back.” The weight of his words settled over me, but I nodded. “I need to know.” Adam: I leaned against the wall, running a hand through my hair as I searched for the right words. “It started before any of us were born,” I began. “Our parents… they weren’t just business partners or neighbors. They were part of something much bigger—something ancient.” Beatrix’s brow furrowed, confusion and curiosity flickering across her face. “What are you talking about?”

Hillary POV: Every story has a backstory. Most of them are epic, while some are bad. Just like how the alley leading to my apartment is dark, how my life has been dark and lonely ever since the beginning. The street's light glitched as I walked toward my apartment, reminding me that my life was a story with a bad backstory. Dogs barked as I walked past different houses along the alley. The waste bin at the front of each home creates a nauseating feeling in my stomach. If I'm to throw up, I will probably throw up nothing because I didn't have breakfast.

Once we found each other, we never left each other sides. In the early dawn of the next morning our decision to be together was easy. We left all of our responsibilties. Hers as a maid for a local family and I as a general. We ran away from the war, from the people who were our supposed families, from everything. For over 400 years we only had each other. I shouldn’t leave like that. I felt Vadas’s gaze following me, he either knew something or was suspecting. I sensed a change in his attitude. I guess I lost this one. And what now? I probably screwed up ‘Lylia’. This identity was one of the most complex. It took me 4 years to build a credible background for her. And Tamor. Gods. I can’t imagine what he will do.

After moving to the city alone, I rented a small room near a movie theater and picked up a job there doing odd tasks. In my last life, I loved watching movies. But whenever I suggested going for one, Nathaniel was mostly against the idea. He'd scold me mercilessly, saying it was a complete waste of time. Now, it felt like I was making up for that regret. I practically threw myself into work every day. Before I knew it, half a year had gone by in the city. I'd gone from just another worker doing grunt work to a junior manager at the theater.
