She swallowed repeatedly, trying to ease the dryness in her throat. The cashier began scanning her items one by one. The soft beeping of the machine sounded too loud in her ears. Belle’s eyes flickered to the monitor—and stayed there. The numbers climbed. Higher. Her stomach dropped. By the time the last item was scanned, the total glared back at her—cold, unforgiving. It exceeded her entire month’s earnings at the bar. Her fingers trembled as she reached for her wallet. Inside, her gaze lingered on one particular card. The one she wasn’t entirely sure she should use.

The next game was announced, and the guests shifted their focus to the large bingo board set up at the front of the room. The game was simple—play bingo, and the first guest to complete five bingos would win the SootheBot 3000, a futuristic cleaning robot. Guests grabbed their bingo cards eagerly, their eyes glued to the screen as the numbers were called. The excitement in the room grew as more and more guests marked off their spaces, the sound of people shouting "Bingo!" echoing throughout the room. Maria couldn’t help but laugh as the first winner—an older gentleman—stood up to claim his prize.

Her movements seemed to remind Bingo that there was someone in the room who could open the door for him. Rushing to the bed, Bingo barked a couple of times, attempting to wake up the person under the covers. Unfortunately, Rowan was deeply asleep, and her earlier movement was merely a subconscious reaction. After a while, it became apparent that her shouts were having no effect. Bingo hesitated briefly but eventually couldn't resist the urge to open the door and go out. For the first time, he leaped onto the bed without permission. While nudging the person under the blanket with his head, he stuck out his tongue and gave her face and neck a few licks.
