The Baroness nods slowly but widens her eyes meaningfully at Camille as if to say we know what you're really out here doing. To Camille's relief or perhaps disappointment no one else seems inclined to press it any further. They float back into polite conversation as easily as if nothing had happened at all. The string quartet shifts into a languid waltz the moment Lucien guides her back into the ballroom. Crystal chandeliers glitter overhead like cold stars, and every eye in the room flicks toward them for a fraction of a second longer than politeness allows.

"Get Isabella to the basement." I caught his wrist. "No." He looked at me. His gray-green eyes mirrored my resolve. "This time, I'm not hiding," I said firmly. The front doors blew inward. Smoke and the metallic scent of blood flooded the air. Lorenzo stood in the doorway, his black coat splattered red. He looked unhinged. The tenderness I once knew had vanished. Red veined his eyes. When he saw me behind Dante, he smiled. "Isabella, my good girl," he said softly. "The ballet isn't over. Why did you leave the stage?"

Vanessa chuckled and walked out. I managed to stand up and walked to the door. Outside, I found girls running down the halls with curling combs and makeup bags. Boys comparing colognes and suits. Everyone wanted to look perfect. Tonight was the night they’d find their mate. The ballroom was already being decorated. Silver lanterns lined the ceiling like miniature moons. Twinkling fairy lights and roses wrapped around the pillars. Lanterns glowing, silk threads of gold dancing in the air. I nodded. “Of course.” She smiled again, satisfied. But something inside me felt restless. Unsettled. And I didn’t know why. — The ballroom was exactly what I expected. Huge. Bright. Suffocating. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling like frozen explosions. Golden light spilled across marble floors. Waiters moved silently through the crowd, carrying trays of champagne.

“You will have to enter by yourself for now. I have to go take care of something. Go down this hallway and the ballroom will be on your left.” The Ballroom is decorated like a winter wonderland. The room was adorned with hundreds of potted white and silver branches with fairy lights for a soft glow. White and silver round tables encircled the large dance floor with white flowers and feathers as centerpieces. Everything seems to be covered in magical snow. “Beautiful” I whispered looking around the room. All the guests wore masks, but I could just tell who some of the people by their mannerism and wished I could run up to them and scream “I am here!”

That said, the ballroom took my breath away. Unlike the main foyer with its fantastic imitation of the night full of the stars, the ballroom had the advantage of owning a splendorous glass ceiling; the center opened to display the moon as she made her trek across the sky. Around the crescent skylight, were fantastic scenes of wolves leaping through clouds and darkened forests. The glass marble, in a way, gave each color a certain depth, a shimmering effect that made the wolves seem almost alive.

The walls are adorned with intricate tapestries, and the scent of fragrant flowers mingles with the soft strains of classical music that fill the air. The ballroom envelops us in its enchanting embrace, its splendor an invitation to embrace the magic of the night. The soft rustle of gowns, the elegant twirls of couples on the dance floor, and the mingling of laughter create a symphony of joy that ignites the senses. As we step further into the heart of the ballroom, I'm captivated by the sheer beauty of it all. The enchantment of the night wraps around us, promising a world of wonder and possibility.

An ice sculpture of Icelus (I could only presume it wasn’t of Morpheus or Phantasus) stood in the middle of the dance floor while couples twirled around it. Poppies decorated every pillar and lilies were placed in vases along the walls. “Callista! You came!” Cassia grabbed hold of my hand and dragged me toward the corner of the room where all the succubae sat laughing alluringly. She looked like a flower girl at some posh wedding, utterly cute.
