Or is that top secret information?” “No, it’s actually a historical piece about the Lost Colony of Roanoke and what might have actually happened to them.” Bias’s shoulders slumped a little. “Oh, interesting.” “You don’t like it?” “It’s not that, seriously that’s a cool idea, it’s just . . . well, I was sure you would be writing something about your house.”

Christmas was the reading of the book. This Christmas, Don's book was a novel—Norwegian, which was not a coincidence, a novel by the same writer whose essays were in the Norway reading programme. The novel was called The Dark Year, and it was about a man who spent a winter alone in a cabin in the far north of Norway, experiencing the full darkness for the first time. Don had been saving it since September, when he had finished the essays. He had placed it on the shelf above his desk, the designated holding place for the Christmas book, and had not opened it once.

“Since you’re back, are you going to pick the next book?” I blinked. “Me?” “Of course,” she said, smiling. “You’ve been gone. You deserve the honor.” Everyone nodded expectantly. I looked down at the stack of books on the table, my fingers brushing across their covers. My hand paused on a novel about love, identity and societal expectations. This book will give them a glimpse of what I passed through during my absence. I smiled softly. “How about this one?” Brent groaned. “Oh no, not another depressing tragedy. Can’t we read something with a hopeful romance?”

I can't use any of my usual tactics to deal with Sara's grief. "I need to read one of those books Jannah handed out," I mumble as the machine halts, and the doors reopen. I head towards Sara's door, and I can't help but get excited. Even if the next few weeks are hard, all of my time will be split between her and paperwork. She can even hang out in my office with me. A thought occurs to me, 'Not unless we burnt the place to the ground'. Now, that is an entertaining idea, everyone knows the witches were rotten to the core. “What are you planning in the wicked brain of yours?” I laugh. “Very simply my friend, we burn their kingdom to the ground if they don’t surrender her to us”. Chuck grinned. The Kingdom was in the middle of nowhere in the wilderness, high in the Whiteface Mountains. Their Kingdom is a remote place where, even humans, would never think to visit.
