"Do you know why I keep buying you pretty dresses?" she asked me. She looked at me with turquoise eyes and continued, "Because it's so much fun to give dolls new clothes. It's a tremendous sense of accomplishment to see a Barbie doll I dressed up so prettily myself."

I dropped onto the grass beside her, stretching my legs out, laughing when she handed me one of the dolls. “Does Barbie like pool days?” I asked solemnly. “She loves them. But she needs sunscreen,” Donna said, smearing a pretend line of lotion across the doll’s arm. I nodded gravely. “Safety first.” Her giggle was pure sunlight.
