He instructed the men to strike a few additional torches, before he slid into the chamber of bones.
“They are gone,” August said.
Flavius asked, “Who, sir?”
“Those I fought there. They are gone, look!” He pointed as a soldier brought a torch to bear. “See the blood on the bones? It is fresh.”
“That’s frightening,” Flavius acknowledged, with a deadpan voice.
“What is?”
“That you were telling the truth, Decurion.”
August grimaced and pointed to the larger shaft. “Come along then, all of you. This way.”
