The young ones were a short distance away across the island. My magic made something like a topographic map of the land around us in my mind. We were on a large island in the swamp and in the middle of a no man's land of territory beyond it was 'The Beast,’ it belonged to him, but was that really what he was? I didn’t think so. My father had called his kind protectors of the swamp, of the bayous, something older than the Arcadian people that had settled here. There was more to the story I was sure. I had known real Beasts, these were good people, good men, and that weighed on my conscious.

We never went back to normal, and honestly, none of us wanted to. That wild night changed us all. Some secrets don’t destroy you, they open doors you never knew existed. The End

The kind of beasts humans thought were myths, but in reality, they were all hidden in plain sight. I kept turning the pages like a mad man but couldn't find the creature. Most books mentioned vampires and different breeds of werewolves. There were a few sections about mermaids and faeries. Not what I was looking for. I paused as I flipped through the last few pages. There was a picture. A giant beast with a human face and spiderlike features. Bingo... [That thing will have us for breakfast. You might as well change your name and move to Neverland.]

But my hands refused to close the book. The children ran. They screamed. They called him a monster. An animal. My throat felt dry now. And so the name stayed. Beast. I swallowed hard. The elders decided his fate before the sun rose. Such things could not be allowed to live among them. A cold heaviness settled in my chest. They dragged him to the well at the edge of the village. My grip on the book tightened. He begged he cried, he pleaded for his parents to help, but none of them did, they only looked at him… Their eyes filled with hate

As I took small bites of my meal, my mind wandered back to the book's descriptions. When breakfast was finally over, I excused myself politely and headed back to the garden. I retrieved the book from its hiding place and found a secluded spot where I could read in peace. The more I read, the more I realized how much had been lost to history. The white wolves were not the monsters they had been made out to be. They were beings of incredible power and kindness, who had only sought to live in harmony with others.

I carefully unwrapped the cloth and opened the book. Her handwriting was beautiful but slightly slanted with age. I flipped through the first few pages, reading bits of her life, about her mate, her people, the early days of the pack before the Great War. Then, about halfway through, I saw a heading that made my heart skip a beat. “The Beast Beneath the Mountain” I sat down, reading carefully. “There is a darkness far older than our kind. A wolf not born of the Moon, but of chaos. His name is Derek.”

I yelled, my bones cracking as I allowed Thaddeus to take over. My wolf was pure white and almost twice as large as the brown she-wolf threatening a cowering Tori. I was glad Bethany was in hiding or I might have mixed them up in the ensuing struggle. I didn’t know what her wolf looked like. Nor, I suspected, did she. The snarling creature had my employee’s arm in its jaws when I struck, ripping off its head in one aggressive motion. An almighty roar emerged from my throat as Thaddeus continued to ‘worry’ the dying beast.

He snarls as my puke hits his pelt, but he doesn't slow down. "Close eyes," he orders, and I quickly obey. My world goes dark, and my brain zeros in on my pain again. Nathan. My Love is gone. The forest I dreamed of seeing took him, and I wasn't allowed to follow. Sobbing once again becomes my sole focus, and the beast carrying me doesn't say anything else. His arm does tighten, though, and my face buries into his fur. His hand holding me goes from an aggressive grip to a firm hold. It's as if he understands my pain.

Valerie “Oh no! Not again.” Mathilda flopped on the bed letting out a heavy sigh, “I hate sleeping under the same roof with chickens and lambs!” I laughed at her long face, trying to cheer her up, “Come on, it’s not that bad Mattie. Lambs are adorable and you will love the sceneries there.” “For god sake, Val” Mathilda rolled up her eyes listlessly, “I’m not an idiot. I’ve been there three times and I hated every single minute being there!”

Pulling her from her thoughts. “Seems as good as any of them.” Annie said with a shrug. She wanted to be as excited as Candy about the babies, it made her feel good that at least her mate could accept the babies. “Do you see any that you’d like? I saw one about child raising, but they seem all to be focused on doing it ourselves. We’ve got a pack and I don’t think we’d be able to keep my mom away now that she knows.” “I don’t think most baby book writers are writing towards shifters.” Annie said, “I’m good, did you want to look at anything else, like something for you?”
