For a heartbeat, it managed to stay up, swaying on one remaining “leg” and a column of sagging paperbacks.
Then its entire spine—built from thick, ancient tomes—shuddered and split.
The stack opened like a dropped accordion.
In the gap where those books had fused, in the hollow suddenly exposed, something else became visible.
Not more shelves.
Not ink.
A rift.
