I could barely pay attention to his words. He slowly pulled away from me and reached for my arm, pulling me until we stopped in front a wooden door. His hand slipped into his pants pocket and he pulled out a key, his jaws ticking as he pushed the key into the key hole. My brow furrowed and I bit back the urge to ask why he already had a damn key. Nate pushed open the door with a force that almost had the hinges ripping off. Before he reached forward and picked me up, letting my legs curl around his torso just as the door jammed shut behind us.

With only a split second to make a decision, I turned and raced towards the door, knowing that I couldn’t allow the individual to get away. Opening the door to what I thought was a storage room, I stepped inside, and as the door behind me closed, I quickly realized this was no normal storage room. The stacks of books around me began to disappear, and the light that once filled it turned into complete darkness, as the only light that remained was the red glow from the necklace around my neck.

I thought I could protect myself, but could I really? And did I deserve to be protected? If anything, I would follow him to keep my own thoughts at bay. Steeling myself, I followed him through the secret door. The secret room behind it was full of books. I wasn’t sure what I’d been expecting – we were in a library, after all – but it wasn’t this: a large table in the centre, overflowing with open books, their spines long since cracked; corkboards on the walls, torn pages of books pinned to them; glossy green houseplants reaching up towards the flickering light.

AMBER I tilted my head, intrigued. He pressed a blue book’s spine, causing it to slide back like a button. The bookshelf rattled, revealing a concealed door. Ray turned the gold-plated doorknob twice in opposite directions, unlocking it with a click. The door creaked open. My jaw dropped as I peered inside—a vast library. “This is where we store our knowledge,” he explained as we stepped in. My footsteps echoed against the wooden panel walls as I counted the library’s floors. It had five floors, with the topmost floor veiled in darkness.

His physical body is in prison, but his spirit dwells within those walls. I never want to open that door again. No amount of therapy will ever make me. When one door closes, another door opens. I don't know if I believe that overly used phrase. What if my life is a hallway with millions of doors, and they are all locked? Where is the key? The door on my time with Chad has closed.
