Elaria clenched her jaw, furious at the way heat pooled low in her belly. “You’re not supposed to be able to do this to me.”
“I’m not supposed to want the enemy’s healer,” he said, and the raw, unguarded truth in his voice startled her more than the words themselves.
For a moment, neither moved. His gaze searched hers, as if trying to find something buried deep under the fear, the mistrust, the lies between them.
Then the stone corridor shuddered, dust falling from the ceiling. Somewhere beyond the Bone Gate, something massive struck the other side.
