The walls were growing, the stone shifting and warping as if the entire tenement was being absorbed into Kael’s expanding armor.
"He's not fighting them," Bernard whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and terror. "He's terraforming them."
Kael raised his arms, and the violet light from the lanterns erupted, pouring into him in a torrent of pure, unadulterated pain. He felt his humanity fraying at the edges, a thread snapping in the wind. He could see Julian through the gap in the trapdoor—the look of betrayal, the fear, the realization that the boy he knew was already dead.
