Ben immediately forgets his worries when he sees a stack of gifts piled under the table and reaches for them. “Let me help, Mrs. West.” Chloe gets up and follows my mom into kitchen, leaving us all in confusion again. She’s a kind person, but I never took her for someone who’d willingly work at someone else’s home. Denzel and Jacob carry all the gifts to the couch, where Ben goes through them one by one. Curious, I follow him too. He opens a giant box at first. He tears the wrapper and finds a remote control helicopter inside. I gasp at the design of the toy and realize it’s the one that Ben has been asking me for over a year.

She stood at the corner, arms folded, smile sharp as a glass ornament. Jace straightened instantly. I stepped back so fast I nearly tripped. Bianca’s gaze flicked between us — my swollen lips, his disheveled hair, the distance that wasn’t nearly enough. Her smile widened slowly. “Oh,” she said lightly. “This is going to be… fun.” And just like that… I knew: Christmas was about to get a whole lot worse.

It is a good thing that everyone is busy with the preparations for the approaching Halloween Event that everyone is so excited about. It was a Christmas of firsts for both Felix and Cassie. For Felix, this was the first time that his house had ever been decorated for Christmas. In the past, he had put up a plastic miniature tree if he remembered and while Hazel had still been alive, she had put up a menorah for the December festivities. Now, the decorations started right from the gates to the mansion, with the pathway leading to the house lined with colorful reindeer figurines, giant candy canes and plastic snowmen. The house was decked in strings of flashing Christmas lights that Felix was certain would be visible from space.

“This is the message." I glared at the screen, the words registering before I could even finish reading. “Shipment NX043- delivery time 12:15- date 12/03/25. Everything was the opposite of how it was supposed to be. Above, was my number boldly written as the sender. “There has to be a mistake," I said, reaching out for my own phone.

"That sounds great. Come on, let's go." We grab our clothes from our bags before making our way back to the bed. Ben climbs on first while I slide under the covers. Once he has settled down next to me I wrap my arms around him and bury my face in his chest. "Goodnight," I whisper, almost drifting off immediately. "Merry Christmas Eve, sweetheart," he whispers back before putting one hand on my shoulder and running the other through my hair. I close my eyes and drift off to sleep, smiling happily. I have a feeling that I'm going to love living here.

Julia I stand back and watch Riley and Nina put the final touches on the Christmas tree, and then he pulls out a Christmas angel to sit on the top. "Would you like to put this on the top of the tree, Princess?" Nina is still bouncing on her toes. I swear the girl hasn’t stopped since she found out that we had the tree.

“You don’t have to eat that. I’ll bring you some biscuits.” Then, Mom turned to me with a cold look. “Next time, do it properly. Or you will be punished. And after breakfast, you’re helping me prepare for the Christmas dinner. Your aunt Carol, her husband and their three kids are all coming.” I felt something sink inside me. I can see gently falling snow, and I know that the children will be thrilled. My father, no doubt, will take them outside to build a snowman.
