My summer shorts were loose to begin with, and since I had put them on just to sleep, I hadn't even bothered with a belt. One quick tug, and they slid right off. "Wow… Helen really picked out something good this time." Clarissa sounded excited now. She had moved right up behind me, close enough that I could feel her breath against my back every time she spoke. Inside, I was panicking and furious at the same time, but I didn't dare move. If she realized what was really going on, the embarrassment would be unbearable.

“For now.” The relief didn’t last long. Jealousy didn’t only come from outside threats. Tuesday at the office was ordinary until it wasn’t. I was in the break room pouring coffee—black, no sugar, the way Dad always drank it—when Tom walked in. Tom was one of the junior analysts: easy smile, quick laugh, harmless. We’d been chatting more lately, mostly about music and weekend plans. Nothing flirty. Just… normal. That day he leaned against the counter next to me, stirring sugar into his mug. “You catch that new indie band at The Blue Note last weekend? Killer set.”

Her stomach tightened painfully. One of the men answered immediately. “We’re currently reviewing the CCTV footage to identify her.” Sophia’s fingers curled tightly against the carpet. Still not touching, but close enough to steady her. “I’m sorry about all this, but I can definitely explain,” he said. Selena looked at him—and this time, she let it happen. Didn’t fight it. “You will definitely explain.” She settled herself, careful, calm. Was her voice like when she spoke again? Stronger than before. “They built this in secret.” Keller’s gaze held hers. “Then we bring it out.” Selena exhaled, turned back to the screen, her resolve hardening into something fierce.

James: (steps closer to Lily) "We'll figure this out together, okay? We'll take it slow and figure out what we both want." Lily: (looks up at James and nods) "Okay. But we have to keep this a secret. We can't let anyone find out." James: (puts a hand on Lily's shoulder) "I know. We'll be careful. I promise." Lily tried to act like everything was normal when she saw James again, but she couldn't help feeling nervous around him. She knew they needed to talk about what had happened, but she didn't know how to bring it up.

Ben asked him quietly. Eyebrows went up as he looked at Ben. "I- I'm Jayden King." "I think you're still discovering who that is," Ben said. Jayden gave Ben an evaluating look. "Are you trying to be some kind of Zen Master?" "Depends. Is it working? Are you thinking deep thoughts?" Ben smiled faintly. Jayden turned away so Ben wouldn't see his smile but Ben recognized the motion for what it was and felt a little burst of satisfaction.

Ben gave me a piece of cake and I moaned with pleasure every time I put a small piece of cake in my mouth. "Do you like it?" Ben asked. I nodded. "You have cream on your lips." His hand reached out and wiped the cream with his thumb. I looked at him intently. His pair of gray irises returned my gaze. However, I remembered the time when he rejected me. I immediately looked away and returned my focus to the beautiful flowers in front of me. "Do you have a secret business with Jeremiah?" I asked. Ben turned his head and frowned. "You guys seem to be hiding something from me. I have a right to know if it concerns me, right?"

Beatrice asked doubtfully, and she has never been this confused in her life. Which of the Clarke's is he talking about, just then the door opened and Beatrice threw her gaze sharply to the entrance and Ben walked in wearing a deep blue suit and white shirt which wasn't buttoned completely, giving her a sneaky peek of his chest. “I'm sorry to ask you another question, Mr. Shawn, but can I know his full name?” Beatrice asked, she wanted to clarify her doubts, as her eyes met with Ben's eyes and they both held each other intensely.

I squeal and widen my eyes at her words. “She’s right, though. I mean, look at you, sexy as hell.” Ben stands leisurely in the door, leaning with the shoulder against the door frame, while eyeing me up and down and starts biting off some beef jerky. Ben is extremely handsome himself. Black short messy hair as if he’s just gotten out of bed paired with striking blue eyes, he definitely is eye candy too, and he knows it. I could see it in the mall today. Ben is most definitely a master at flirting with any woman who crosses his way.

“What’s your name?” “Hillary. Hillary Diana Clarke.” “Wait here.” He disappears inside, returning a moment later. “He’s coming.” I wait. Then, the door swings open. Ben is standing there. He has heavy, messy curls on top of his head and is wearing an oversized red hoodie with black jeans. He looks taller than I remember. There’s a glass in his hand—most likely bourbon, not wine. He pushes his glasses up his nose and glances back into the living room before looking at me.
