Whatever this secret was, it was big. He schooled his face and took a deep breath. ‘Tell me,’ he said. ‘I will bet my ridiculously large savings account on that we will hear the pitter patter of little paws from the Beta apartment in about six months,’ she told him. He could feel the pure joy she felt as she shared her suspicions with him.

An electric current coursed through my whole body, but I held the discomfort in and struggled away from his arms. Then, I met Tim's cool, calm eyes. When my voice came out, it was shaking. "Do I know that expert?" My nails were digging into my palms. The pain was throbbing, but my eyes never left his face. Tim looked at the ground for a moment, then he met my eyes and put on a smile. His answer came out like he was talking about an old acquaintance. "Zoe Wilson." We had a tacit agreement spanning six years to never bring that name up, and now he had just broken that agreement. That name crashed onto my head like a meteor hitting the ground.

Then he rose slowly, each movement unhurried, deliberate, as if every second was meant to draw her deeper into the silence he carried with him. “Maybe you don’t need it,” he said. Her pulse skipped. “Everyone has a name.” “Names are for introductions. For polite conversations. This,” he gestured faintly at the space between them, at the library that seemed to shrink around their voices, "this isn’t polite. This is just between us.” The phrase struck her harder than it should have, like a door locking behind her. Just between us. No labels, no definitions, just the kind of dangerous secrecy she’d once thought belonged only in typed confessions sent to strangers.

“You can’t tell anyone I gave you this.” Then she peered up at me through her lashes, apparently going for seductive. A for effort. Solid C-minus for execution. “Your secret’s safe with me.” I grabbed the note before common sense had a chance to make a comeback. “Seriously, thank you.” I got the hell out of there before she could turn ‘I’d owe you’ into an actual negotiation. The second I hit the parking lot, I pulled out my phone and punched in Briella’s number. My fingers weren’t as steady as I wanted them to be. Every muscle in my body wound tight as I silently begged her to answer.
