“But from now on, you call me when you need something. Not him. Me, I’m your guy.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes. Promise me.” He turns, raising his pinky finger, of all things.
I blink, incredulous. “What are we, five?”
“Maybe not. But I take my pinky promises seriously. So, promise me.” His little finger waves insistently, pout intact.
I groan, rolling my eyes, but eventually hook my pinky with his. He grins, small but real, a light breaking through all that storm.
His hand lingers in mine, and when he turns back, his voice is gentler. “Things are going to be hard at home. Especially now.”
