Chapter 13 Adele Wilson I walked inside the ice hockey arena at exactly 5:30 A.M. My legs halted forcefully as I spotted Jason on the ice rink, skating. Fingers curled tightly around the hockey stick as he moved the puck speedily across the rink. I had pictured everything in my mind. How beautiful and perfect I would be after Jason helped me lose some weight as he had promised, but I couldn't bring myself to continue this. Not when my father's life is in jeopardy.

Why not just do it now? I sighed loudly and started. “Well, it's not as crazy as yours. Some of us didn't join gangs.” I said sarcastically. “You wound me.” “Yeah. Err, I used to have this boyfriend earlier in college. He was….is a hockey player too. I really liked him then. Though he felt the same way about me. It turned out that he was with me basically because of a bet. Cliche right?” I laughed at my own joke. But nothing seemed funny to Liam because his face was witching up from what I could see here.

The headlines were worse. ‘Hockey star Duke Smith spotted with mystery woman. Is he cheating? My chest tightened. The comments were wild. I shouldn’t have read them. But I did. ‘Who is she? They are our power couple ‘She’s probably ugly, that’s why he’s hiding her face’ I couldn’t read anymore. My hands started shaking. My breathing became uneven again.

The way the camera catches things the naked eye misses. He stepped closer, leaning against the neighboring locker. "The way you and Miller look at each other... it’s not hockey, Liam. It’s something else.And very vulnerable." "I told you, it’s chemistry. I can’t be fighting with my teammate who was once my roommate," I snapped, finally looking him in the eye. "If you’re so interested in film, maybe you should spend more time studying the plays so you could be better on the rink and less time playing detective."

Ben knew the hockey team's regulations in Hillary Campus were crystal clear. Players were forbidden from engaging in romantic relationships with teammates. Any violation could result in disciplinary action, or even removal from the team. Ben slipped his hands into his pockets, already imagining the chaos such a revelation would create. "You turned down my feelings Noa." His smirk deepened. "So you'd better not be falling for Leon." He glanced once more toward the hallway where Noa had disappeared. "Because if you are, you'll be out of this hockey team before you even realize what's happening."

The blonde reporter looked at Maya. "Is that true?" Maya nodded, a smile tugging at her lips. "I'm impressed he pays that much attention to anything other than hockey." A few reporters laughed softly. Hunter chuckled beside her. "Hockey may be my first love," he said, turning to look at Maya, "but you're the love of my life." Maya's heartbeat stuttered. She almost looked at him. Almost. It was fake. Every word of it was fake. Yet the way he said it—without hesitation, without sounding rehearsed—made it dangerously believable.

They’d smiled at each other, and for a second, it looked like a fucking scene out of some teen romance movie, two star-crossed lovers reaching for the same book in a library, fingers brushing, eyes locking, hearts racing. I nearly lost it. And then Luke, one of my teammates, leaned over and muttered, "Damn. That girl looks like a sex doll with that hair." That was it. That was when I stood up and walked out. Because fuck that. A reporter cleared her throat, snapping me back to the present. Blonde, sharp-eyed, the type that got off on making people squirm. She could practically hear the sports blogs drafting their headlines in real time. They reached the end of the carpet where a reporter from the NHL Network stood waiting with a microphone. "Captain Wilde! Eve! Over here!" the reporter called out, her face lighting up as they stepped into the interview zone. "Terry, the internet is absolutely buzzing. Before she could answer, a passing senior leaned toward us, lowering her voice as though she was sharing a classified information. “That’s Noah Romanov.” My expression immediately changed. “Romanov?” She nodded eagerly. “His older brother is Alexei Romanov.
