Better Than The Movies Book Novels & Stories

I figure if the book is any good, they’ll make a movie of it, so I might as well see it then and only waste two hours of my life, as opposed to wasting all the extra time it takes to read a book. Sorry. Obviously if you’re reading this, then we don’t really see eye-to-eye on this matter. Then again, unless you happen to be a socially inept serial killer who kills for profit and runs screaming away from any kind of real human interactive relationship, then there probably isn’t too much that we see eye-to-eye on, so let’s just agree to disagree.

A woman brings in the two plates of tiramisu then removes our dinner plates. We spend dessert talking about favorite movies. Milos hasn’t watched many of the newer ones—his mother was a lover of classic movies she watched to learn English. He shrugged, he preferred to read with what little free time he had. I find out he reads mysteries and thrillers—several I have as well. We even share a favorite author who has had several of his books made into movies. “Oh, I really want to watch the latest. I’m dying to see how they turned it into a movie. Usually the movie ruins the book for me, but somehow the movies of his books have been really good.”

“We are still halfway to the end, but I got a strong feeling that it will not be a happy ending.” I smirked. In A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks, when Jamie’s illness was revealed, it was quite obvious that it wouldn't be a happy ending. I learned about the movie first but I also read the book later on. I like movies, but I don’t know why I feel a lot more connection with the characters in the book and understand the emotions better. I guess maybe it is because in the book, you can read the characters’ emotions and thoughts through the lines. But I guess it’s not for everyone since there are also people who prefer to watch movies rather than just read books.

“By the way, right away you do things to my body. I didn’t know that I was starving ‘til I tasted you.” Noah shot back, “It was romantic… until you ruined it.” “You’re annoying!” she exclaimed and playfully pinched him all over. Later, they lay down on the blanket, gazing at the stars and talking about different things. Ingrid asked him about the book she gave him, and he said he liked it. “I saw the reviews—low ratings. I only bought it because I saw you had Thomas Harris books in your library,” she said. "Well, it’s not fair to compare this book to his older works. It’s different, but the story’s fine. Maybe they can turn it into a movie and tweak some parts.”

Nathan checked his watch to see it was just after eleven. “I like him,” Nathan told her honestly. Holly chuckled. “I think everyone does,” she told him. “If you want to get on his good side, start talking to him about Ian Fleming’s books versus the James Bond movies.” “I’ll keep that in mind,” Nathan said, storing away the tip for future use. “Does he like the movies or the books better?” Holly turned and gave him a look that said it should be obvious. The man did own a bookstore after all.

Both were really awkward at each other at first but when they found out that both were reading the same book, they eventually got a comfortable to talk at each other. “So, you also read that book-” “Yeah, I got into it after a friend of mine recommended it to me.” “Isn’t it a great book.” “Yeah, I got hooked on it after reading the first chapter.” “bla-bla-bla” Both continued to talked to each other and enjoyed their conversation. “I was feeling an awkward atmosphere growing between our table so I was gonna try to start a conversation but when you brought out your book, I was just surprised to see a person reading it.” The girl said.

"About what?" "About whether some things should stay in books, or if they should become movies too." Emma's eyes lit up. "Like Frozen? That was a movie AND a book!" If only it were that simple. I finally clicked the email open. The message was from Maria Chen, a director whose work I'd admired for years. She'd made powerful films about women overcoming impossible odds, stories that didn't shy away from darkness but always found the light. Her last film had won three Oscars.

I ask, already giving up. “Me Before You.” “Why that movie?” I ask, scrolling toward it. “Because it’s sweet, and kind. . .and sad.” “You love sad movies?” “No, not really, but I like that one.” “Let me guess. It’s a romance movie.” “Yes, but it’s not just a romance movie. It has depth, and emotions, and. . .” “. . .none of the things I will ever give a fuck about,” I cut in.

She knew what people in her school were like -exactly the way Leo just described which was one of the reasons why she preferred to keep to herself. Leo cleared his throat, "Tell me about yourself." Annie was taken aback, still surprised that he actually did want to get to know her. "Like what?" Leo shrugged, grinning a little. "Anything. What's your favourite movie?" "I prefer books," Annie mumbled, feeling pathetic but being honest. "The books are better than the movie versions, anyways," Leo chuckled causing Annie to perk up, not thinking he would think the same as her. "What's yours?" She then asked, leaning back against the booth, feeling a little more comfortable now.
