It was on another side, behind the coven. A third witch, perched on a raised rock, played a strange, obsidian flute. When she blew into it, the sound seemed to bypass all material boundaries and reached directly into the mind, a psychic assault designed to baffle and daze.

One branch bent low and brushed against her cheek with a cold, wet touch. She slapped it away, shivering. “Don’t touch me!” But another branch slithered down and wrapped around her shoulder like a hand. She screamed out of fear and broke free from its touch. The First Bride purred with delight. “They want you. They’ve waited just like I have. All brides must beg the trees before they are worn down.” Camela felt sick to her stomach. “Beg? I won’t beg them!” she replied fiercely. The whisper became sharper. “You will.”
