One scout’s bike flipped as my power slammed into it. The rider tumbled across the ice. I did not stop. Another shadow blade cut the second rider’s arm and forced him to drop his bow. Jax fought beside me now. His blade flashed. He fought better this time, but one of the enemies struck him. Blood sprayed across the ice.

Wolves were running all over, and then she got a mindlink. "The Shadow Howlers are here, and it looks like they came to fight," Her dad said in the mindlink to the pack. Why would The Shadow Howlers come to their pack? They were the pack that basically policed other packs, but The Last Moon Pack hadn't done anything wrong. In fact, they were so vanilla that Bianca hoped her mate would take her away. She picked Trisha up and ran toward the pack house. They got to the front porch just as the warriors arrived.

Shadow water touched four of the ninjas and all of them succumbed to darkness, leaving behind no trace at all. The shadow eater shot towards Hikari and me. Hikari slashed his Katana, shooting out bright blue and white light like the waves of the ocean. The shadow eater veered, changed its projectile and then shot at us again. Yuki roared, chasing after the shadow eater. We were so distracted in handling the one in front of us we lost track of the ones who were still trying to get out of the crater. “Zeve! Watch out!” Rage yelled, and it was then I saw that four of them had been released already.

“On your signal, Shadow Heir.” Eolan inhaled, the cold coiling in his chest. His shadow stretched unnaturally long across the snow, tendrils unfurling like smoke. “Now,” he whispered. The riders surged forward. Hooves thundered, steel flashed, and Eolan’s shadow stormed ahead—snaking around enemy legs, yanking men from their saddles, snuffing out torchlight in bursts of inky darkness. The mercenaries broke formation in panic. Eolan rode straight through their ranks, his blade finding gaps in armor, his shadow twisting into jagged spears that struck with lethal precision.

Hunters. “Shadowthorn sends a message!” one roared. “The Alpha wants his heirs!” Aria shoved the twins behind her, blades already drawn. “Over my dead body.” Luka’s shadows flared. Lila growled, tiny body vibrating with power. The lead hunter lunged. Aria met him mid air, driving both blades into his chest. Hot blood sprayed across her face. She twisted, using his momentum to slam him into the second attacker. Luka’s shadows wrapped the third wolf’s legs, yanking him down. Lila pounced, ripping out his throat with a snarl that was far too mature for her age.

I’m a part of it. “Why me?” I whisper. “Why now?” “Because you’re the return. You’ve always been the one who would come back to break the cycle. Camille was the first, and you… you’re the second. You were meant to be a part of this since the day you were born.” I take a step back, my mind spinning. “What does that mean? What am I supposed to do?” Mayra’s eyes narrow, and I see something flicker behind them. Something ancient. “You’re going to face what’s been waiting in the shadows. You’re going to have to decide whether you’ll break the cycle or let it consume you.”

The moment our hands linked, I felt it. Five different power signatures flowing together, weaving into something greater than any of us could achieve alone.
