One moment they were there, the next, the camera feed showed only empty space. The patrolling guards—one rounded a corner and never came back. A guard near the gate twitched slightly before slumping against the wall. Unconscious. Another, near the main hallway, turned his head slightly—then froze, eyes glassy as he was dragged into the darkness.

The Lycan King raised his broadsword, pointing the blood-stained steel directly at the True King's face. "You think you understand the Northern Shadows, monster?" Silas snarled, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, unhinged frequency. "You think you can buy my loyalty with the blood of my Luna?" Silas reached up with his left hand, grabbing the heavy, silver-clasped dire-wolf cloak he wore over his armor. With a violent jerk, he ripped the clasp apart, tearing the symbol of his Kingship from his shoulders, and threw it into the freezing mud at Valerius’s feet.
