The source. But even a King must be tested." Silas signaled the north gate. "To demonstrate his lethality, we introduce the Iron Claw." Two massive shapes prowled out. They were twice the size of the DeLucas, their fur matted with dried blood and their muzzles covered in spiked steel guards. They didn't wait for a command. They launched. Cane didn't even shift. It was an insult to the monsters.

His pupils bled to black-red until there was nothing but a bottomless void. Then came the claws. They tore through his gloves first, then through skin as if the flesh couldn’t contain them. They weren’t normal claws; they were long, curved, slick as obsidian, veined faintly red as though blood had frozen inside them. His shirt shredded, seams popping one after another until it fell in ribbons off his shoulders. I backed against the wall, my legs shaking so hard they barely held me. “Saint…” It came out in a weak whisper, but he didn’t even glance at me.

I stopped and pressed my palms against the counter. “That if I see Clark Moretti again…” My fingers curled; my claws slid out of their own volition, black points biting into soft, yielding wood. “…I’ll kill him.”

Claws tipped his massive hands, and his tattered pants barely clung to his hips, the bulge beneath straining the fabric. “Who the fuck are you?” I stammered, stumbling back, my camera nearly slipping from my hands. He stepped closer, his boots surprisingly human, heavy, and black crunching the ground. His voice was a low, guttural growl, rough with an edge of hunger.

But that didn’t make it any easier. Pain ripped through me in waves, fire scorching my veins. My spine twisted, lengthening with a sickening crack. My ribs expanded, pressing against my lungs, forcing a guttural snarl from my throat. My fingers contorted, nails splitting, reforming into sharp claws. I clawed at the ground, but my hands—no, my paws—tore through the dirt. My jaw stretched, snapping into place with fangs aching to tear, to hunt, to own the night.

“Bring them down to our size!” The giants moved in arcs, their clubs taking three men down in one sweep. They were loud, bellowing like animals that had never been tamed. My ears rang from it. Everything was sound and pressure. Crack of bones. Clash of metal. The wet slap of flesh hitting mud. The war was loud and messy, and it stank like the end of the world.

I keep close to Ruby, my boots crunching over twigs and dead leaves. “You hunt often?” I ask her quietly. “Only when I feel like slicing something open,” she says without missing a beat. “Relax. It’s good for the soul.” “I’ll take your word for it.” About ten minutes in, Claw freezes. Ruby lifts her hand, signaling everyone to stop. “There,” Claw whispers. “Big one.” I squint through the trees and see it—a massive deer, antlers thick and proud. It grazes at a patch of grass, oblivious.

She asks Corvu, nodding in my direction. “She’s just not from around here.” He smiles. “We’ll take two plates of whatever you are cooking. It smells good.” She nods and walks off, where I only just notice her feet were more like tiger paws. What was this world? “She’s a Clawhop. Don’t ever make one angry and don’t try to outrun them.” “I feel like I should be writing these things down.” He nods and leans to the side, pulling something out of the large hidden pocket he had down his leg.

With a fierce growl, I launched myself at the leader, our bodies clashing in a flurry of teeth and claws. The fight was intense, the two of us rolling and tumbling across the forest floor, our jaws snapping wildly as we fought for dominance. The leader was big and powerful, but I was faster and more agile. I dodged and weaved, avoiding his crushing blows and striking back with precision. I could feel my claws tearing into his flesh, and I knew I had the upper hand. The leader snarled and snapped, his eyes flashing with anger and desperation. He knew he was losing, and he was determined to take me down with him.
