I envisioned the finished product—a majestic grand entrance with shining hardwood and glistening handrails. We were getting closer and closer to the image I'd been chasing in my head since the first day I saw the villa. I was distracted by my thoughts and didn't notice the buckle of the stairs until it was too late. My foot barely had time to touch the next step when a loud crack pierced the air and suddenly I was tumbling down, the steps of the aged staircase crumbling underneath me. A scream tore through my throat as I throttled toward the ground at a terrifying speed. The impact of my body hitting the cement reverberated through my bones as I lay there, trying to remember how to breathe.

I screamed as I tried to shove through them once more. “No,” one of the warriors had the balls to say. “I have to get upstairs!” I screamed once again. “No,” he repeated like a damn child. “Traci’s up there!” I tried to explain. At this point I was ready to start biting people. A warrior finally looked at me like I was the biggest idiot he’d ever seen. “The staircase is blown up.” I blinked. “What?” “The staircase is destroyed,” he repeated as he rolled his damn eyes at me.

However, somehow I managed to get to the fourth floor. Standing near the stairs to catch my breath, I felt a rush of footsteps behind me and I misplaced my balance. The basket in my hands slipped forward, and my sandals tripped, causing me to fall backward from the stairs. Screaming, I grabbed at the steel rail of the stairs for safety. I could feel my heart beating in my mouth. Unfortunately, the rail was slippery and I was losing my grip. I closed my eyes so I couldn't see myself getting fractured. I was on the verge of crumpling when a strong hand pulled me up and I collapsed on a rock-hard chest.

I quickly averted my eyes, realizing I had been staring for far too long. Suddenly, the door swung open, revealing another man stepping outside. I recognized him as the person I had encountered just moments ago. "Yo, Slim, is this girl bothering you, man?" he inquired, and my eyes widened in apprehension. I silently prayed that they wouldn't throw me out, as facing the judgmental teens downstairs would be unbearable. Slim remained silent, merely shaking his head and signaling something with his hand. "Hit her," his deep voice surprised me, resonating with darkness. A chill raced up my spine, and my eyebrows shot up in shock at his choice of words.

He pointed into the gloom. I increased the light from the globe in my hands, ready to fight, even more ready to run, but saw nothing. Then I noticed movement on the tunnel floor. It was low and flat, and gave off a green glow. It was moving slowly towards us, sliding across the ground. “What is it?” I asked. “A slime,” said Nyx. “Poisonous, probably. Once they attach themselves to you, they don’t let go. Vicious.” It looked like one of those robot vacuum cleaners, but rather than cleaning up, it left a trail of jelly in its wake. It didn’t seem particularly menacing. Slipping on the slime’s trail was probably the biggest danger; might have twisted an ankle.

It's disorienting and I'm beginning to feel claustrophic when Graydon--only a few steps ahead of me--cries out as he slips, his arms flailing. race toward him and grab his arm just as he's about to tumble down a sludge-covered staircase. We have a few seconds to look at each other with relief before I lose my balance and we both go tumbling painfully down with a sickening thwack-thwack sound each time a head or arm or leg hits the hard surface.

The creature hovered for a few seconds, looking like a frustrated beast struggling to find a way in, then suddenly lunged forward. Its giant body hit the opening like a cannonball, sending a wave of debris and dirt flying into the sky. Still, it couldn’t get inside.
