She stepped onto the staircase. One step. Two. Three. Her foot slipped. Suddenly— There was nothing beneath her. She fell forward. Hard. Her body tumbled down the stairs with a sickening thud. Dennis shouted. Katie screamed. Ethan, who had just walked back in through the door, froze in horror. Mira lay at the bottom of the stairs, stunned, pain radiating through her arm. Ethan rushed to her instantly. “Mira! Mira, talk to me!”

No sign of any human residents, and not a single candle lit. We advance into the pitch black stairwell. We don’t need a light with the substance pumping through us, but the sketchy creaking of those rotting steps is an unwelcome clamor, echoing off the walls. Jimmy pulls up his foot just in time as the center of one step gives way entirely, opening up a jagged edged hole to the ground three stories below. “Watch your step, boys,” he chuckles.

I flew over the crumbling gap, landing hard on the carpeted floor of the second-story landing just as the lower half of the staircase collapsed into the foyer with a catastrophic crash. I scrambled to the edge of the jagged drop, staring down through choking dust. “Dominic!”

I sulk as I follow him further up the trail, and then I see the stairs. They’re huge, the steps are made for giants, and they seem to go on for bloody ever. Sulkily I try my best to follow him up, while maintaining my fake limp. Each step is bloody huge and each one is more slippery than the previous one. It’s rather treacherous and unenjoyable. “These are the first of the steps,” he announces, oblivious to my struggle. “I just l love climbing these, the leg burn is amazing isn’t it?”

Cole stumbled to his feet and bolted toward the stairs, his legs trembling so badly that he missed a step. With a loud thud, he tumbled down the staircase, landing in a heap at the bottom. The sharp pain brought a sliver of clarity to his frantic mind. Gritting his teeth, he grabbed the railing and pulled himself up, limping as he made his way back up the stairs. This time, he moved more slowly, and thankfully, there were no more accidents.
