This bell only rang twice within a day: once at lunchtime, and once half an hour before dinner, to signal it was time for all residents to rest and retire. My teeth chattered. I looked weakly in the direction the sound had come from, believing I could somehow see it if I tried. It was evening already? Where had the time gone? I was certain none of us had been in this room for more than an hour. Maybe more time had passed in the journey here than I’d even realized, but that couldn’t… How long had I been dancing? As if reminded that a great predator waited at my throat, I looked back to Madam Dro, with fear making my movements sluggish.

I muttered, voice hoarse with sleep. The bell sounded again, each strike vibrating the glass of the window. I squeezed my eyes shut. Why the hell was the bell going off at this hour? Then I remembered, this wasn’t just any school. This is Blackwood. Where monsters schooled behind beautiful faces. Where vampires, I’d overheard, sometimes went for their early-morning hunts, returning before the sun could burn their pale skin to ash. The bell. It wasn’t for us. It was for them. I forced myself to sit up, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. The floor was cold beneath my feet.

My jaw clenched and I exhaled nothing less than the sound of a growl. Looking in my rearview mirror before getting out, I noticed the color of my eyes had changed to black. They only turn black when I let my demon out, the demon that craves the sound of screams, the smell of blood, the sight of fear in someone’s eyes, the feeling of their bones crushing in my bare hands. “Are we going to be okay?” Damon Black stood by the bar, pouring two glasses of whiskey like the chaos outside was nothing. The shell on its back was maroon in color. The razor-sharp teeth were nearly a meter long. According to their best guess, the Black Shell Alligator had reached the mid-level of Martial Emperor. Despite being a powerful enchanted beast, it was just lying there, not moving. Its skull had been shattered. Obviously, the Black Shell Alligator had died. A handsome young man stood beside it. He was skinning the Black Shell Alligator to extract its inner core.
