A huge black dragon reared back on two legs, extending his wings, rising above the roof of the shed. A second dragon appeared, also dark, but this one was almost wolf-like and covered in glossy brown fur rather than a sleek scale.

Yes, as soon as he’s closed the double doors behind him after he follows me in, torrential rain pours, and it sounds like a dam was split open from the skies. A single weak bulb hung overhead, its light flickering as if it might die at any second. Natalia was tied to a pillar. Cloth filled her mouth. When she saw me, tears flooded her eyes. She struggled with all her strength, the rope biting into her small wrists. "Natalia!" I ran toward her. "Don't move." Giovanni stepped out of the shadows, a gun aimed straight at me. "Hand it over." Katrina followed him, arms crossed, her smile sharp and satisfied. "You never could beat us, Rina. Once we have the ledger, Giovanni will climb right back up. And you and your daughter?" She tilted her head. "You will die here."

I immediately lifted my eyes to the sky and saw two dragons soaring above Volkar. Their enormous wings stretched across the sky as they circled the fortress. My breath seized. It didn't matter how many times I saw them. The sight was always breathtaking. Sarah stopped beside me. "Creator." Mina followed my gaze. "I don't think I'll ever get used to that."
