Shadow magic cracked through the air.
Dark bolts of energy burst against the trees and rocks around us, scorching the edges of Zevarion’s cloak. He ducked, shielded me with his body, and kept running. But they were gaining. We wouldn’t make it much farther.
“I’ll shift put her on my back!” Kavira barked suddenly, her voice deeper, more determined than I’d ever heard.
“What?” Zevarion said startled.
Kavira dropped to all fours, bones cracking and twisting as her transformation began. In seconds, her human form was gone, replaced by a massive brown wolf with sharp amber eyes and thick fur that bristled with readiness.
