“Why are you helping me, Damien?”
“Because,” he said, turning back toward the dark corridor, “I want someone to walk out of this house with their sanity intact. Go on, before he get back.”
The Blackwood Café was tucked into a narrow brick alleyway three miles from the coast, far enough from the financial district to avoid corporate eyes, but secluded enough to feel like a hiding place. The air inside smelled of burnt espresso and damp wool.
I chose a booth in the far corner, my back to the wall, my fingers laced tightly around a mug of black coffee I had no intention of drinking.
