Beneath The Mask
The only thing I can focus on is Prince’s unmoving body beneath my hands.
“Check Giovanni’s pockets,” my father orders.
Sal kneels beside Giovanni’s corpse, searching through his jacket. I can’t tear my eyes away from Prince. My hands cup his face, my thumbs brushing over his too-pale skin. His lips are slightly parted, his breathing shallow.
“Found it,” Sal mutters.
My head jerks up, and I see the small bottle in his grip.
“Describe it,” my father demands.
Sal turns it over in his palm, his brow furrowing. “Dark purple glass. The front of the bottle is carved, looks like fire—maybe flames?”
