Chapter 2 — Splash Jerkface Two Weeks Ago… Kallista Hughes stood in the bustling kitchen of Brio’s Kitchen, gripping the edge of the stainless-steel counter so hard her knuckles whitened. Ignites on contact with strong oxidizers." "And cleaning supplies?" Jack asked. "Under the sink!" Olivia kicked open the cabinet under the galley sink. There were old glass bottles of industrial bleach and ammonia. "Don't mix those unless you want chlorine gas!" Ben warned. "We'll die too!"

"Go back to the archives and fix your neck because the smell of those chemicals is giving me a headache." I didn't wait for a second invitation. I scrambled for the door, unlocked it with shaking hands, and practically fell into the hallway. I didn't stop running until I reached the basement bathroom. I splashed cold water on my face, looking at my reflection. The ‘rash’ was itchy and burning, but it had saved me. But as I looked at the red mess, a wave of sadness hit me. Damon had looked so hopeful for a split second—so desperate to find a connection and I had given him a face full of bleach-smelling hives.

The concrete loft didn’t smell like an empty warehouse anymore. It smelled of citrus floor cleaner, fresh-ground coffee, and the faint, sweet trace of Chloe’s vanilla body spray. Jackson strolled behind them, the rest of the group following too. "Where was it again–i think it should be–" Jackson searched through the cupboards until he found it. "Ahhh..."
