I take the bag from the drugstore into the bathroom and get to work. It’s late at night and I’m nearly done with my hair. The blond is now setting in my hair. I was pretty pleased with the way the bleach came out. It wasn’t as stiff as I thought it might get. I change the channel on the old school TV again, uninterested in whatever nonsense is on this channel. I keep clicking through, killing time until I can rinse out the blond. My mind goes blank as I keep scanning channels. There’s a romance movie and the lead characters rush into each other’s arms in the rain. There’s a nature documentary about wolves. There’s a murder crime tv show. And every single glimpse makes me think… about Drake.

I slowly lowered myself to the floor, my knees coming to rest beside the spilled water and shattered glass. Bella gasped softly and moved closer before carefully lowering herself to kneel beside me. We both stared at the mess in complete horror. Something deeply unnatural and terrifying was happening right before our eyes. The moment the tablet touched the water, it began bubbling violently. A faint hissing sound filled the room as the blue coating dissolved at an unnatural speed, releasing a strange bluish-gray substance into the water. Within seconds, the clear water had turned cloudy and murky.

Kai was already mad at me and placed me on house arrest because of it, I didn't want to infuriate him further. "I can't open it until I tell you what happened while you were here with Kai." My heart palpitated as I anticipated what he was about to say. Apparently, it wasn't going to be good. "Spill it, Jasper. You are turning me into a bundle of nerves." I cried. He dug into his pocket and flashed a wrapper of bleach at me, causing me to flinch in surprise. Why would he be flashing such a thing at me? "She wanted to kill you with this thing in my hand." He informed me and my heart thudded faster than before.

Blood smears across the carpet, dark streaks that'll never come out. Good thing this place sees worse things than murder. The bathtub is barely big enough, but I manage to fold him inside. His head lolls at an unnatural angle. I turn away, focusing on the next step. Bleach. Lots of it. The motel's supply closet is a joke—just cleaning rags and half-empty bottles. But there's enough bleach to burn away DNA. I pour it over everything: the carpet, the walls, the doorknobs. The chemical smell makes my eyes water.

"Look at you, all eager to please. You didn't even offer anything in return. Why would she help you out?" He then handed me a card. "I'm Daniel Jenkins. Here's a little something for our first meeting. ZenWave's beauty clinics are all part of my family business. With this card, you can enjoy unlimited visits." ZenWave was a well-known, high-end beauty clinic chain. A single visit there could cost tens of thousands of dollars. This gift was too generous. I didn't take the card, but Leon snatched it from Daniel's hand and stuffed it into mine.

"What is it?" "The flash drive is empty." I looked at him. "What?" "The video file..." He refreshed the folder but still...nothing, not a single file remained. He unplugged the drive before inserting it again. Still empty. We both stared at the screen in disbelief. "I know what I saw," I muttered. "So do I." Brooks picked up the flash drive, turning it over in his hand. "It deleted itself." Before I could respond, every light in the house went out. Darkness swallowed the room.

Sun-kissed skin, relaxed vibe, and just the right amount of mystery. I think… I just added him to my mental crush list. But before I could keep swooning, the mood in my head soured as another man’s face flashed in my mind—Mr. Drunk Bag Stealer. Ugh. What was his problem anyway? With those thoughts spiraling around in my head, I didn’t even realize I had fallen asleep. The sharp ray of sunlight hitting my face woke me up. I groaned as I slowly sat up, realizing I had forgotten to close the balcony doors again. A soft breeze passed through the room, carrying with it the scent of salt and hibiscus.

A towel was spread over Chocolate's shoulders, clips holding messy sections of her dark hair in place while streaks of dye worked their way through. My hands were stained with little smudges of chestnut brown, proof I had no damn clue what I was doing but was determined to at least pretend I did. I meant, this was my first time dealing with hair bleach. Even when Emily was young and still around, she never asked for a hair dye, so I had no idea what the fuck I was doing to Chocolate's hair.

I let out a sharp breath and pushed the bedsheet away. “I really thought it was dye, I promise.” I defended myself, though not with much confidence, feeling quite confused. I truly believe that was bleach. I believed it was simply the natural shade of blue that would make it appear whiter. “Take a look,” she said, pulling out the bleach she had brought and opening it for me to see. It is nearly colorless, much like water. I trembled in disbelief; this was worse than anything I had ever experienced.

He looks at David, grunts, and tosses him the last heel of sourdough, preserved and re-preserved so many times that it bounces when it lands on the counter. Darrel appears next, two flights down, carrying with him the bright lemony stench of disinfectant: David can tell already that he’s poured half the bottle on his hair for the inaugural bleach. “If I obliterate the pigment, maybe the wolf will just come out white and skittish and leave everyone alone,” he says, which is funny because Darrel’s the only one of the three who’d enjoy the attention.
