All wrong. When I woke up this morning, I noticed it immediately—the dark brown strands had lightened somehow, showing hints of silver at the roots. Not gray from stress, but actual silver, like moonlight woven into hair. It had to be the dye job washing out. But it still freaked me out seeing it. I'd spent the last hour applying the dye Anna had procured for me, desperately trying to cover the strange new color. The brown was holding, mostly, but in certain light I could still see the silver trying to break through.

Spreading out the individual strands, he moved them around. "Are you trying to take up hair weaving?" I asked. He laughed. "No. But you're right. There is something different about it. It's almost like your hair is absorbing light instead of reflecting it." He looked up, caught my gaze. "Does that make sense?" I nodded. "Yeah. But instead of the ash undertones, they're closer to blue." I twisted around, changed how the light hit my hair while looking in the mirror. "I don't know. That sounds crazy."

She closed her eyes, breathing steadily, relaxed. She was so thin. It hurt to see her like this. I didn’t want to make quick work of it, knowing this was how she was rewarded but my throat was having a tough time swallowing. Finally, once I had finished washing her, I took out the bottles of dye remover. It wasn’t bleach but she said it might not work as well on hair that was really light with a really dark color. I was into bottle three when I could actually see streaks of her old color. Auri was patient, arms wrapped around her knees in the warm water as I scrubbed through the color in her hair.

In its place is a pixie cut. Short. Choppy. And so aggressively, blindingly, violently orange that for a full second my brain simply refuses to accept it as real. Not auburn. Not copper. Orange. The specific, saturated, electric orange of a traffic cone, of a Halloween pumpkin, of something that exists to be seen from a very significant distance. I grab a handful of the short, bright strands and pull—just enough to confirm it’s attached, that it’s real, that this is actually happening and I’m not still asleep.

Instead of my normal mousy brown, it is silvery gray. Okay seriously now. What is going on? What is happening to me? Is this a trick? Is there bleach in the shampoo or something? If it's a trick, it isn't funny. I pick up the bottle and smell it. It smells like strawberries, not bleach. Weird. I have never heard of a wolf's eye or hair color changing when they are coming of age, but that's what the doctor thinks is happening. Diane comes in after lunch with paperwork and pamphlets for me. She hands me another little bag. "Just a little something to help you stay incognito until you are finished healing."

"We're taking you to the academy for proper training." "Get out!" I scream louder. The mark that appeared on my skin last night is now glowing again in their presence, but they don't seem shocked at all. I catch a glimpse of my reflection in the sliding window. What the hell? The curly tips of my chestnut hair are no longer dark but burning into ember orange up to my ear level, where it blends with my dark hair. I touch them, it's warm and real. What's happening to me?

Transformed. Her hair was no longer just the dirty blonde she’d had her entire life, it was now streaked with gold as though someone had taken a paint brush and individually highlighted some of the strands. Even her skin looked different, more glowy, like she’d spent the last two days in a luxurious spa and not tied to the back of a horse.

Jerry replied with a gentle voice. “I will, thanks,” Sheila responded curtly and the call came to an end. Now Sheila's mind was reeling and her instincts began to tell her things. It was either because she was a supernatural being with supernatural eyes, that was why she could see Hannah's real hair color. Meaning the grey color could be fake, or could it be that it was the golden bronze that was fake? Or, it was a system glitch, network issue, or even a screen hue issue. However, the former made more sense as she was unable to suggest why her hair color was grey and bronze at the same time.

“Maybe she’s worried the discount dye will melt her hair off.” The women around laughed. I stared straight ahead. Don’t react. Don’t speak. My nails dug into my palm. I lowered my head when Rowena walked out of the salon. I sighed in relief. The stylist walked toward me and checked my scalp. Her expression darkended. “Oops.” Oops? OOPS? I inhaled slowly through my nose. Prison was not worth it. She quickly rinsed everything out while muttering excuses undr her breath. Thirty minutes later, she was done. I looked at myself in the mirror. I blinked. The dark brown was already gone. In its place was now red curls framing my face. The color made my skin warmer, my eyes sharper.
