he cries. I lunge the knife into the left side of his stomach. He screams in pain. I did it again on his upper right. “Help! Mum! Dad!” Lockie screams. “Goodnight, sleep tight.” I whisper. I quickly slash his throat and leave. I head back to Dead Man’s Woods. I’ve completed my revenge for now. Until someone else crosses paths with me I’ll stay hidden. Saunders house: The front door flings open and the security lights light up. A young boy runs out covered in blood and keeps collapsing. He holds his hand to his throat and the other on his stomach.

I raise my brow at her, folding my arms over my chest. “Everyone knows it is not possible for a dragon without an affinity to use magic,” I remark. “Not possible or never tried? Those with an affinity can naturally wield magic without ever learning. However dragons are magical beings, so it is safe to assume you too can learn magic,” she proposes. I lean back in my seat, arms folded over my chest. It has always been said that if you do not have an affinity, you cannot use magic. Was all that a lie? Or did no one ever try and learn magic?

Buppig says. “I’m not a dragon,” I say. “No, you’re not,” Aolis says, his gaze narrowing on Madelyn. Her heart rate is increasing. I think this is becoming a bit much for her. “But, you are descended from the Drache line. You have dragon’s blood in your veins. That is the magic that I felt in you.” “The Drache name, was that your mother’s or father’s name?” Lily asks her. “My father’s name.” Lily looks back at the prophecy, reading a passage out loud.

“Or I swear on the most sacred thing I have, which is my baby, I'll have you used as a game ball on the next hunt.” Daemon arched his eyebrows and then smiled. “Okay, fair enough,” the vampire said and sighed. “Now be honest with me, what the heck am I doing here?” “My blood,” I said and sighed. "You've done a lot of experiments, but none have turned out well. The blood won't stabilize." “And it will never stabilize,” Daemon said, and I frowned. “You must treat it for what it is: divine magic.” Marco looked at me amused; he knew what Gabrielle had told me.

“He’s not attacking, he’s leeching him!” Draco stood, dusting charred soil from his coat. “Every king feeds the heir,” he said calmly. “Even if the heir is borrowed.” Elen’s breath hitched. “He… he’s using Damien’s bloodline to summon Bianca’s curse...” Damien collapsed. His heart stuttered. Something inside me snapped. I leapt, aiming at Draco’s throat but he flickered out of my reach. A blast hit my side so violently that it cracked the bone under my fur. I tumbled across the ground, pain tearing through my ribs, but I stood anyway. Lilith’s howl echoed across the battlefield and hundreds of wolves stopped fighting for a heartbeat to listen.

Her expression is unreadable, a pool of still water hiding unknown depths. “The blood truth is an ancient magic,” Morwen intones, her voice like dry leaves rustling. “It does not heed politics or desire. It speaks only to the lineage of the flesh, the song of the blood. It will confirm the sire of the child carried by Jessica Blackthorn, and in doing so, bind the future of the Lancaster line.” She holds the obsidian lancet up to the firelight. It glints, a shard of captured night. “Alpha,” she says to me. “Your blood first. To call the magic.”

Calmly, I took a dagger, casually touching the sharp tip of the blade with my tongue. It was old, dark, made from bronze back during Alethar’s time. The forging style was called Raven’s Claws. It was not poisoned. Sharp steel easily punctured my wrist, and dark, almost black drops of blood fell onto the white plate. This was the focus which powered the blood magic, but it had to be royal blood, given freely.

The vampire obeyed, and Knowles Senior’s screams filled the room as the blood took effect. "Good," Chloe said coldly. "Now you’ve got an eternity to think about it." She turned to her mother, who was already chanting, arms outstretched, head tilted back. The air shifted, swirling around her as magic began to manifest. James watched, wide-eyed, as if a blue orb emerged from Caroline’s body. Chloe guided it toward him, and it absorbed into his chest. Without hesitation, Chloe bit her mother, spitting the blood onto the floor. Caroline collapsed, twitching violently. "Give her blood," Chloe ordered another vampire. Caroline’s agonized cries echoed through the room.

I wasn’t going to wait that long. With a deep breath in, I closed my eyes and focused on all the injuries I had accrued in the minutes spanning my flight. My magic wasn’t strong enough to heal me entirely. The blood smeared across my body—the dragon’s blood on my face, my own blood seeping out of my shorn haunch—was slowly poisoning me. I couldn’t even groom myself clean, or else I’d suffer even worse effects from ingesting blood. But I could at least mend the worst of my injuries so I could flee from here while it was still dark.
