"Genetically enhanced. Pain resistant. They are the ones who burned our house down five years ago." The car screeched to a halt in front of the Vance Global tower. The lobby looked normal from the outside. The doorman was standing at his post. People were walking by with coffee cups. But I smelled it. The metallic tang of blood. "The doorman is dead," Kael said. "Propped up." We did not wait for the driver to open the door. We burst out onto the sidewalk. Kael moved first. He grabbed the doorman by the shoulder. The man slumped over. A clean bullet hole was visible in the back of his jacket.

Grayson "War, what the fuck did you do?" I demand. The second I step into the shipping container, the stench of weed, sweat, and blood slams into me. The walls are splattered with it—thick streaks of red staining the cold steel like a fucking horror movie. I come to an abrupt stop just inside the door, my gaze flickering down to the slick pool of blood drying on the floor. Fucking great. I don't mind blood. I've spilled plenty of it. But I don't fucking like walking in it if I don't have to.

Is she already asleep? Before I could even knock again, the door had opened slightly. I thought the old lady opened it for us. When I pushed the door forward, my heart jumped instantly on what I've seen. The old lady is dead! It's nails have signs of blood on it and her skin have scratches all over. It seems like she had been infected by the plague and did not manage to take the pain well and just passed away. I immediately look for a long cloth to cover her body and let the family in. I chanted some prayers on her body and of course, asked permission on her soul to let us stay in her house.

Brian was still standing there, stunned. I glanced at him calmly. "Not doing it? Then, forget it. You only get one chance." With that, I turned and opened the car door, sliding into the driver's seat. Through the glass, I watched my dad bend low, wiping my windows in silence. His movements were clumsy. Forceful. Just like the way I used to scrub the floor for that pair of jeans. I started the engine. When he finished the last window, I rolled down the window and tossed out a few coins.

Chapter 16 – The Gate of Blood Night descended, and the Holy Gate began to open. The entire city seemed to hold its breath. The sky split apart into a crimson wound, from which poured rivers of liquid light that flowed like living blood. And I saw the people that had done that to them, their smug faces and crooked smirks, their hands stained with the blood of my parents, and the set of tattoos on one of their forearms.

Why in heaven's name had everything become so out of control in so little time? A sudden rap on the door shattered the still silence. Laura jolted; her body grew hard as if the thunder had just muted overhead. Each beat connected with the next, muffled, to create a deafening thump in her ears. Obscured in the soft light from the bedside lamp, the doorknob glistened, making a small but forbidding barrier between her and whatever waited on the other side: whoever. Forcing herself into motion, Laura gripped the cool metal knob and turned it as she braced herself for whatever might come next.

The bathroom door opened and there stood Francis watching her with worry clearly written on his face. Seeing the blood on the floor and Irene coiling in pain, he quickly rushed to her to help her up, carrying her into the shower to wash her up. He left her in the shower and rushed into the room to make a phone call. By the time he returned to the bathroom, Irene has already lost consciousness. *** Irene woke up and saw Francis and her doctor at her side, she noticed she was lying in the bed and couldn’t remember what happened immediately. Her mind was foggy as she tried to remember, she looked from Francis to Joan, a frown settling on her brows.

” I ask him. “It’s right there, stupid!” he says. “Man, how would you survive without me?” I don’t answer him. I see the door now, and I’m almost there. I pick up speed and only stop sprinting when I reach the door. What if it’s locked? My hand connects with the golden knob, and when I twist, it opens. I breathe a sigh of relief. But then… as I walk into the antechamber, I see that the blood is spread throughout this room as well, staining the floor the same crimson color as the hallways.
