She was only a kitchen maid, in life. Her name was, is, Mary Trapnell. The story is that during the English Civil War, the house was under siege and soldiers burst in, killing the menfolk and making the womenfolk wish they were dead. Mary was not about to stand by and meekly allow the invaders to have their way with her. She picked up two of the cleavers used for butchering meat, and attacked anyone who came near her. She was so fierce and so determined that the bodies piled up in front of her and blocked the doorway. In the end, they set fire to the house, and she was burned alive inside.
